what can I do?

This campaign affects individuals from all walks of life and also organisations in the public, private and voluntary and community sectors because stopping discrimination, violence and inequality against women helps everyone in society. To be able to do this, we need strong women’s organisations.

There are many ways that individuals and organisations can support the campaign.

Write to Phil Hope and Harriet Harman

With a new Prime Minister and cabinet re-shuffle, it is important to build relationships with the new faces in government to ensure they are knowledgeable about the value of the women’s voluntary and community sector, as well as the worsening funding crisis that is resulting in the closure of women’s organisations across the UK.

We need to keep women on the agenda and so we would urge you to write to either the new Minister for the Third Sector, Phil Hope MP, who has taken over Ed Miliband’s position, or the new Minister for Women, Harriet Harman and let them know:

  • why the women’s voluntary and community sector is so important to you/your service-users

  • that we are facing a worsening funding crisis and action needs to be taken NOW, with funding provision specifically to help save women’s organisations from more closures and cutbacks. (This is especially affecting sexual violence organisations).

  • that we need sustainable, long-term funding, not just ‘quick-fixes’

  • how important it is to change the ‘no recourse to public funds’ rule which stops women with insecure immigration status, such as asylum seekers, trafficked women and migrant domestic workers from accessing public funds, even if they need to leave a violent relationship. Refuges are being forced to turn women away or fund their places out of the organisation’s reserves, and the women are often forced to stay in violent situations. This is a human rights issue that urgently needs addressing.

It would be great if you could write your own individual letter, but if you’re strapped for time, we have written template letters that you are more than welcome to use.

Why Women? Documentary Film

This short documentary gives voice to champions in the UK Women’s Sector – showing who they are and what they do, exploring why their cutting-edge work is vital. Breaking the myth that gender equality has been achieved, the film uncovers the critical issue of under-funding facing women’s organisations in the UK.

For any audience, the documentary provides an introduction to issues facing women’s organisations in the UK and is a call to action in support of women fighting for gender equality. The film was made by the Women’s Resource Centre as part of its Why Women? Campaign and can provide a basis for discussions on gender equality, women’s rights, women’s organisations and feminism.

Why Women? has previously shown at:

  • North Northumberland Women's Network, Gender Equality: A crisis in confidence conference, March 2006

  • Women's Aid Federation for England National Conference, Leicester, July 2006

  • Representing Women events, Tower Hamlets and Aston University

  • Capital Women, Mayor of London’s Annual Conference, 2007

  • Women’s Resource Centre Annual Conference

  • Women Acting In Today's Society (WAITS), Consultation on Third Sector Review, September 2006.

  • Rape Crisis Network Annual Conference, April 2007.

  • Encountering Human Rights: Gender/Sexuality, Activism and the Promise of Law conference, University of Westminster, London January 2007

Here’s what viewers had to say:

“Really thought provoking material”

“it really makes me want to get more involved with the fight for equality… inspiring and encouraging me to spread the word about women's rights.”

“‘I'm feeling quite uplifted, positive and ready to campaign more!’

“The DVD is in demand from various groups, and I think several more women's groups in the North East with join the campaign as a result”

A film screening could be an informal gathering of friends or colleagues, a showing at your conference or meeting, or a screening open to the public. We just ask that you leave some time for discussion after the film and give us feedback about how the screening went. If you would like to hold a film screening, contact us with details of your proposed screening, and we’ll send you your free copy of the DVD.

Volunteer for a women’s organisation

Volunteers are vital to the survival of women’s organisations and volunteering can be a rewarding experience for both the volunteer and organisation. All types of women volunteer - from those looking to gain work experience, students on internships, women with specific skills and women who want to give something back to the community.

Volunteering can be one-off or ongoing and can include things like helping out at the office or being a member of the Board of Trustees. All registered charities must have a Board of Trustees and they are responsible for governing the organisation and developing it. Many studies have shown that a strong Board of Trustees greatly helps an organisation to thrive.

Send us your story

Have you used a service from a women’s organisation?

For many women, the support they receive from women’s organisations can lead to a new life.

"I had my first son in the refuge, that was 11 years ago when I suffered from domestic violence. My husband was abusing me physically, financially. I was damaged. From the refuge I was able to get my indefinite leave to remain. I went to university, got my degree, and then I felt like giving it back. Therefore, I work here. At that time I didn't know my rights as a woman. So now, I let women know that they have rights as a human being, as a citizen." (why women? report)

We’re keen to collect information about individual women’s experiences of using a women’s organisation. If you’d like to share your story, we’d love to hear from you.

Are you a women’s organisation?

Are you a women’s organisation or project which has had to justify why your services are for women-only? Or perhaps you’ve had to justify why services to women are best delivered by women’s organisations, as opposed to generic agencies. If so, please contact us.
